New River Building Supply: New Showcase and Design Center Extends Tradition of Quality and Service

Story by Sam Calhoun

Get ready contractors and homeowners—now there’s a third member of the New River Building Supply & Lumber Company family. Adding to the two-decade old building supply company that has locations in both Banner Elk and Boone, New River recently opened a 15,000 square foot showroom called the New River Showcase & Design Center at 2815 Highway 105 South in Boone.

The center allows customers and contractors to experience the latest in the design industry as they tour hundreds of displays and vignettes showcasing fine home products such as windows, doors, cabinetry, lighting fixtures, cultured stone, floor coverings, log home products and much more. The center opened on Monday, October 30, and a grand opening celebration is planned for Friday, November 10.

“The idea behind the store is to help make the decision process easier for the homeowner,” said Michael Button, general manager and part owner of New River Building Supply & Lumber Company. Phil Templeton is part owner and majority shareholder and Perry Yates is part owner and president of the family-owned corporation. “This store is for contractors and the general public,” explained Mike Johnson, sales manager. “We’ve historically been a contractor-oriented business, but we’re taking a different approach with this business.”

According to Button, the center is a perfect place for contractors to send their customers to pick out house components—such as windows, doors, cabinets, lighting, kitchen accessories, bathroom accessories—so that homeowners don’t feel rushed in their choices.

Button said the contractors are “very excited about it.”

Button sees the new center as having three main focuses. One is kitchen and bath design sales, the second is windows and doors sales, and the third is a showcase of the products that New River carries, with an emphasis on product innovation.

“It’s also to educate,” Button added.

That education will be based in the center’s new Builder’s University—a 45-seat conference room. The Builder’s University will feature ongoing events for designers, architects, contractors and builders to introduce product innovations and to teach the proper uses of existing and new products. Events will be held twice per month and companies affiliated with New River Building Supply & Lumber Company will sponsor the workshops. A mailing system will be set up to notify members of the Builder’s University of upcoming events.

One of the main purposes of the new center is to show customers the options they have when building their own home, said Button.

“This will make the design process easier, because it’s hard to pick things out of a catalog,” said Button. “It’s a natural expansion of New River.” Ready to assist customers are knowledgeable employees and qualified, certified designers.

The New River Showcase & Design Center is the aesthetic arm of the two original New River Building Supply & Lumber Companies, located at 3148 Highway 105 South in Boone and at 2340 Tynecastle Highway in Banner Elk.

“This store is an extension of the existing quality and service that is offered to customers at the New River locations in Boone and Banner Elk,” added Button.

The hundreds of models and displays in the center will be updated frequently and “will not be stagnant,” said Button. “There’ll be a constant evolution to keep up with the high expectations.”

The New River Showcase & Design Center was constructed in 10 months by General Contractor Charlie Weaver of S.E. Weaver Construction Company, Inc.—assisted by architects Bruce A. Caulfield, AIA, and Derald M. West, AIA, of Caulfield Architectural Design. Jennifer Pastusic of Signature Interiors completed the interior design.

In the new center, customers will find windows and doors from Andersen, Avonni, Jeld-Wen, Golden Windows Unlimited, Therma Tru and Rogue Valley; cabinetry by Omega, Dura Supreme and Haas; outdoor cabinetry Danver and In & Out; hardware options from Top Knobs, Emtek, Baldwin, Amerock, Anne at Home and Berenson Corporation; tile, stone slate and marble by Daltile, Ahnzu, The Bob Timberlake Collection and Soterra; cultured stone by Pavestone; indoor appliances by KitchenAid, Range Craft and Electrolux; sinks and faucets by Danze, Rachiele, KWC and Kohler; outdoor appliances by Lynx; hardwood flooring; countertops by Granite, Silestone, Cambria, CeasarStone, HanStone and Corian; and lighting by Troy-CSL Lighting and Hudson Valley Lighting.

All of these products will be on display during the New River Showcase & Design Center’s grand opening celebration planned from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 10. The general public is invited to this celebration that will feature tours of the center throughout the day, a catered ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. and lunch served from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at New River Building Supply, just down the road at 3148 Highway 105 in Boone.
