Relax and Rejuvenate at The Sanctuary

Here’s a question practically everyone can answer in the affirmative, “Who’s stressed out?”

From the incessant snow and black ice to the dire economic news to political figures who don’t pay their taxes—not to mention the regular day-to-day aggravations—the more important question is, “Where can I find a respite from the madness?”

The answer is on Greenway Road, just down from the Boone Mall, where experienced and caring practitioners are ready to help you escape, for just a little while, from the thoughts and cares that make you want to tear your hair out. That place is The Sanctuary: A Day Spa.

Imagine having the knots in your neck and upper back massaged away, your alligator-like winter skin transformed into a radiant glow and the aches in your feet disappearing in a swirl of aromatic warmth. These services and more are available at The Sanctuary.

Forbes magazine recently reported that although consumer purchases are down sharply, Americans are still spending on particular items and services. Personal care is one of them. “Aside from bare necessities, the things consumers are still buying have one thing in common: They provide a break from reality,” Forbes reported.

A break from reality. That’s what the many services available at The Sanctuary provide, along with rejuvenation—the feeling that you can cope with practically anything when you leave.

The massage therapists at The Sanctuary have decades of experience among them and a wide range of skills and specialties. Whether your goal is relaxation, deep tissue detoxification, stress reduction or sore muscle relief, the therapists will design an ideal combination of techniques to meet your expectations, with 30-, 60- and 90-minute sessions available. Warm stone therapy—heated stones applied to the body—and foot reflexology are also available.

Skin treatments include full body therapies that hydrate and refresh the skin. Mineral salt scrubs, wrap therapies, detoxifying mud massage and customized exfoliation are all tempting choices on the menu, and the facial treatments include a combination of aromatic steam, massage, cleansing and rebalancing of the skin’s surface.

Among the new body treatments are Kaya regeneration therapy, manual lymph drainage and Champissage. Debra Grosswald, a graduate of the prestigious Swedish Institute, brought these techniques to The Sanctuary.

Manual lymphatic drainage is a light touch therapy that aids in the recirculation of body fluids. “This therapy helps with swelling,” Grosswald said, “and is good for pre- and post-surgery, as well as for cleansing the body.”

Kaya is a primary healing modality in India for a number of conditions, but in the United States the treatment is known for its rejuvenation effect. It involves two oils—one green, one amber—that are made from more than 300 herbs between them. To learn Kaya regeneration therapy, Grosswald trained directly with Dr. Rajkumar, the western physician who introduced the ancient techniques to this country.

Grosswald describes Champissage as a scalp, face, shoulder and upper back massage that quickly provides relaxation, helping to relieve tension headaches, eyestrain, neck and shoulder stiffness, and disturbed sleep.

And the services don’t stop there. Manicures, multi-step pedicures and professional waxing are also offered at The Sanctuary in a quiet, calming, candle-scented environment with soft music unobtrusively playing in the background.

While you might think The Sanctuary is just for women, it’s not. The services are available to men as well, including the facial treatments, and the spa stocks a line of men’s skin care products. “Men have skin issues too,” Grosswald said.

Those products—and the products for women—are from Dermalogica, the number one ranked product line in a nationwide survey of spas.

And the spa treatments, particularly the skin care, are not just for adults either. The aestheticians, also with decades of experience among them, provide treatments that help with teen skin problems—acne included.

February is a great month to enjoy a facial because The Sanctuary is offering a special: a free lip renewal treatment, a $20 value, with each facial. In addition, everyone who takes advantage of the February special will be entered into a drawing to win lip renewal products valued at $25—the perfect solution for dry, winter-cracked lips.

February is also the month when sweethearts are struggling with the question of Valentine’s Day gifts. The Sanctuary has the answer, offering gift cards, as well as special packages in a variety of price ranges. You can even create your own combination of therapeutic and rejuvenating services. Grosswald pointed out that the spa offers couples’ massage as well.

With two makeup artists on staff, The Sanctuary is well equipped to cater to wedding parties, and during the winter months invites non-skiers to consider a massage or other treatment while their significant others or family members are on the slopes.

The Sanctuary recently began offering extended hours and is open now on Mondays from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Thursday evenings until 9:00 p.m., making it easier for working folks to take enjoy its range of services.

So treat yourself or someone you love to a “stay”cation instead of a vacation, a relaxing getaway that costs far less than a trip.
It may be cold outside, but it’s warm in The Sanctuary—warm and comforting and healing.
