MARCH 18, 2010 ISSUE
Brewer’s Briefs
I’m ashamed to admit this, but last Saturday night while working the door at the Saloon was the first time I’d heard the Lazybirds live since seeing them at Kidstock at Horn in the West during fall 2001. Seriously, it’s shameful to have lived here this long and missed so many shows by one of the region’s best bands. Not surprisingly, the Lazybirds had the big Saloon crowd boogieing late into the night.
I’m much more ashamed to admit that I made a terrible omission in last week’s column. Asheville-based singer-songwriter and former local resident Aaron Burdett contacted me in regards to a benefit concert for Lazybirds member Andy Christopher and I gladly agreed to write a paragraph about the show. However, being the absent-minded person that I am, I completely spaced and wrote nothing.
So you can imagine how dumb I was feeling when both Burdett and Christopher were at the show at the Saloon last Saturday night. While I’m typically glad to meet folks in person that I correspond with via phone or email, I decided against approaching Aaron at the end of the night, knowing that if I did, I’d have some explaining to do.
And while Christopher couldn’t take the stage and perform with his old mates, there was no shortage of excitement that he had made the trip from Chapel Hill to attend the show. However, like thousands of other Americans, his medical expenses are mounting and there is no easy solution. Fortunately for him, Christopher’s musical brethren are looking out for him.
I’m hoping that this week’s column serves as both a public service announcement about the show (this Friday, March 19, at Black Cat, featuring the Aaron Burdett Band and The Pond Brothers) and an apology. Burdett made a simple request and I dropped the ball. Please make your way to Black Cat and support Christopher and his family by enjoying some great live music in an intimate setting.
This Week…
-Let’s review: This Friday, March 19, singer-songwriter and former Boonie Aaron Burdett and his band, along with Snake Oil Medicine Show members George and Andy Pond, will take the stage at Black Cat Burrito for a benefit show in support of their friend and Lazybirds member Andy Christopher.
-I’ve said many times before that acoustic duos are a dime a dozen, but once in a while, a pair of folks come along that can really sing and play. Wilmington-based Roots Soul Project is one of those duos. The band will be playing their blend of funky, soulful acoustic fare at Pepper’s this Friday, March 19.
-Attention bluegrass lovers! Nashville-based picker and singer Dave Peterson will make his way to the High Country for a show with Lenoir’s Strictly Clean & Decent at Canyons this Saturday, March 20. This show may be a bit under the radar, but it’s going to be a hot one.
-This Saturday, March 20, Boone Saloon will host a benefit concert for earthquake relief in Haiti featuring the incomparable Naked Gods, No Eyes and Eric Delong of The Apprentice. You can’t go wrong will a solid triple bill and a great cause. Come and rock out for the tens of thousand of people in need, and while you’re at it, drop a donation at the door.
Next Week…
-Black Mountain based Southern rockers Velvet Truckstop will return to the High Country for a show at Murphy’s on Saturday, March 27. Dishing out some hard-driving tunes with an undeniable Panic-esque tone, Velvet Truckstop will keep you pumping your fist in the air all night long.
-If you’re looking for the sensitive singer-songwriter type, don’t go see Sunny Ledfurd. However, if you’re looking to dance, laugh and have a good time to some silly acoustic pop rock songs, he’s your man. Ledfurd and his band will be at Canyons on Saturday, March 27.
On The Horizon…
-The one and only Joe Buck will return to Boone for a show at 641rpm on Thursday, April 8. A member of Hank III’s band, Buck cranks out a punk-powered, take-no-prisoners brand of psychobilly freak out music. Don’t miss this show.
-On Saturday, April 17, Boone Saloon will host a stellar triple bill featuring nationally acclaimed rockers Roman Candle, The Ravenna Colt (featuring former My Morning Jacket guitarist Johnny Quaid) and local alt. country quintet Possum Jenkins. You can see us Possums any time, but trust me, you DO NOT want to miss Roman Candle and Ravenna Colt. This show is going to rock your face off.
-The inaugural Thaw Out Boone festival will take place at the High Country Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 24. Bands slated to appear include Upright & Breathin’, The King Bees, Throwdown Jones, Zoso, Bafoodus and many more. If it’s a sunny day, it will be a great time to drink a few beers and throw off this winter chill for good!
