An Appalachian Summer Festival will present the festival fundraising event “Jazz Beneath the Stars at Westglow” with a performance by the Todd Wright Jazz Orchestra this Thursday, July 29, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Westglow Resort and Spa, located off Highway 221 at 224 Westglow Circle in Blowing Rock.

BRAHM Art and Antique Show Thursday to Sunday

The 4th annual Blowing Rock Art and Antique Show, sponsored by the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum (BRAHM), will kick off at the Blowing Rock School at 4:00 p.m. this Thursday, July 29, with the Early Bird Sale and Preview Party and will continue through Sunday, August 1.

Approximately 20 vendors will be in town to sell English, European and American furniture as well as clocks, oriental rugs, china, pottery, fine silver and crystal, jewelry and more. The show will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets to the Early Bird Sale and Preview Party are $30 and include refreshments. They may be purchased in advance at the museum office. General admission to the show Friday through Sunday will cost $10, which will cover entry for the entire weekend. Advance tickets are available at Carriage Trade Antiques, Finley House Antiques and the BRAHM office, located on the second floor of the Martin House in Blowing Rock, or can be purchased at the door. Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show Thursday to Sunday

Location: L.M. Tate Show Grounds, Blowing Rock

The Saddlebred portion of the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show was held in June and now the second half of the oldest continuous horse show in the country—87 years to be exact—continues this Thursday to Sunday, July 29 to August 1, with the start of the Hunter/Jumper I exhibition. The first half of hunter/jumper lasts through Sunday, August 1, while Hunter/Jumper II begins on Wednesday, August 4, and continues through Sunday, August 8.

Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. each day except on Sundays when starting time is at 7:45 a.m. A Blowing Rock tradition since 1923, the event will be held at the L.M. Tate Show Grounds located at the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve. General admission tickets cost $5. Purchase tickets at the gate. High Country Crank-Up Thursday to Saturday

The Carolina Fly-Wheelers will sponsor this year’s High Country Crank-Up, an engine show featuring antique engines, tractors and tools, from this Thursday to Saturday, July 29 to 31, beginning at 9:00 a.m. daily.

The show, now in its 31st year, will be located on Highway 421 South, approximately five miles from Boone in the Mack Brown Farm field across from the New Laurel Springs Baptist Church. Admission for adults for all three days is $8, a two-day pass is $6 and a single pass can be purchased for $4. Ragtime: The Musical Thursday through August 6

Lees-McRae Summer Theatre’s performance of Ragtime: The Musical features a 50-member cast, large choruses, an orchestra and elaborate costumes and sets.

Performances continue this Thursday, July 29, through Friday, August 6, at Hayes Auditorium on the Lees-McRae College campus in Banner Elk. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. July 29 to 31 and August 2 and 5 and at 2:00 p.m. on July 31, August 1, 4 and 6. Tickets are $24 for adults and $13 for students and children, with general admission seating.

Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys Friday

ASU’s An Appalachian Summer Festival presents the classic veterans of mountain music, “Dr. Ralph” Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys, and new kids on the bluegrass block, Cherryholmes, to the festival stage at Farthing Auditorium this Friday, July 30, at 8:00 p.m.

With a production that combines elements of the 1971 and 2005 films and the book by Roald Dahl, the Blue Ridge Community Theatre presents Willy Wonka, Jr. Friday to Sunday, July 30 to August 1, at Harvest House Performing Arts Center in Boone.

Show times are 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets, which will be sold at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12.

Two-Part Dulcimer Workshop Saturday and August 7

Cost: $35 per person, $30 seniors

Horn in the West will host a two-part series of Mountain Dulcimer Workshops with Mary Greene. The workshops will be offered from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday, July 31, and Saturday, August 7, in the Hickory Ridge Homestead Living History Museum. The workshops are open to all skill levels, so beginners are encouraged to join.

The first workshop on July 31 will be focused for beginners to teach tuning, fundamentals and simple traditional songs. The August 7 workshop will be a follow-up and more intermediate to allow all skill levels to participate.

Each workshop is $35 and $30 for seniors, paid by cash or check the day of. Visitors are welcome to bring their own dulcimers, but there will also be some to borrow. For more info and/or to reserve a spot, call 828-264-2120.

Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary Hoot’Nanny Saturday

Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary will host Hoot’Nanny, a family-friendly festival, this Saturday, July 31, from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Buckeye Recreation Center in Beech Mountain.

The festival, a fundraiser for the sanctuary, will feature live music from The Corklickers, a wildlife game show for kids, face painting, birdhouse building, door prizes, food, vendors, a bounce house and tours of the sanctuary. Tater Hill Paragliding, Hang Gliding Competition Sunday to August 7

For the fifth year in a row, Tater Hill owner Bubba Goodman offers his private peak to legions of paragliders and hang gliders during the Tater Hill Paragliding and Hang Gliding Competition.

This year, the competition takes place this Sunday to Saturday, August 1 to 7, and is open to all pilots with an H2/P2 certification or higher. Competitors must have turbulence and thermal experience, a harness, reserve chute, helmet, GPS and radio—all equipment is subject to meet director approval.
