Free Home Energy Efficiency Seminar Thursday
New River Light & Power and W.A.M.Y. Community Action present “A Homeowner’s Guide to Energy Efficiency” on Thursday, March 31, at 6:00 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension office, located at 971 West King Street in Boone.
The free seminar is designed to educate homeowners on how they can conserve energy and lower heating and cooling bills. Seminar attendees will receive a free energy efficiency kit that includes CFL light bulbs, spray foam, a low-flow showerhead and more. Representatives will be on hand to discuss options for financing home energy improvements, and seminar attendees will be eligible for discounted energy assessments. Si Kahn, Kruger Brothers at ASU Thursday
The Kruger Brothers and Si Kahn join forces for “Peace and Justice Through Music” this Thursday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of Plemmons Student Union at ASU. General admission is $18, and student admission is $8. The benefit concert will support the work of the Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies. Trash’n Fashion Show Friday
The second annual Trash’n Fashion Extravaganza and Elkland Art Center Fun(d)raiser will take place at High Country Press on Depot Street in downtown Boone on Friday, April 1, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Admission is $3 for students and $5 for community members.
Student designers and models will debut handmade creations of wearable trash at the event, demonstrating issues of waste and promoting creative reuse. Runway walks will take place at 7:15 and 8:30 p.m., and student band Small Talk will perform in between walks. A silent auction will take place at 6:30 p.m., and finger foods will be available. Henson Chapel UMC Fishing Tournament Saturday
The fourth annual Henson Chapel UMC Fishing Tournament is this Saturday, April 2, in Cove Creek. Fishing begins at 7:00 a.m., and entrants must register in the picnic shelter behind the chapel. Each pole will cost $1 to participate, and there are three age categories: 2 to 8 years old, 9 to 15 years old and 16 to 100 years old.
Whoever catches the largest fish in each category gets $100, and then the largest fish of the day, no matter the age group, also gets $100. For more info, call 828-773-5622.
Spring Thaw 5K Road Race Saturday
The Spring Thaw Relay for Life 5K Road Race will be held Saturday, April 2, at 8:30 a.m. at the Boone Greenway. Race registration costs $20 and will end at 8:15 a.m. on race day. Blowing Rock Trout Derby Saturday and Sunday
The 32nd annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby will be on Saturday and Sunday, April 2 and 3, at Broyhill Lake. Trout caught in any Watauga County public waters on derby days are eligible for trophies and prizes.
Fish can be caught from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. No entry fee or preregistration is required. Prizes will be awarded in five categories: Men, Women, Girls (12-14), Boys (12-14) and Small Fries (11 and under). Kids and anglers with disabilities can fish at Broyhill Lake, where licenses are not required, but there is a limit of three fish per day. Others must have a license and obey posted regulations. High Country Wedding Expo Sunday
The High Country Wedding Expo on Sunday, April 3, will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Summit Trail Solarium of ASU’s Plemmons Student Union, and admission is $5 per person or five canned food or toiletry items to benefit the Hospitality House, Boone’s local homeless shelter.
Presented by the Association of Consultants and Event Services, the expo will feature a wide variety of wedding and special event vendors from Boone, Blowing Rock and the surrounding High Country, as well as from Tennessee.
