Question Around the Office
What Happened on Rivers Street Last Thursday?

Any motorist traveling through Boone last Thursday, October 22, around 2:00 p.m. knows that getting around town was less than easy. King Street, Depot Street, Water Street and Poplar Grove Road were all congested as motorists tried every shortcut in the book to get around Rivers Street, which closed because of flooding. We wondered what happened.
According to ASU Physical Plant Assistant Director Patrick Brittain, a 50-year-old water line exploded underneath Rivers Street on the ASU campus, between the Duck Pond and Wey Hall, around 2:00 p.m. last Thursday. The explosion sent enough water out of the pipe to wash away sediment and dirt underneath the asphalt, causing the asphalt to buckle, said Brittain.
ASU Physical Plant staff spent 12 hours—from around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday to about 3:00 a.m. on Friday, October 23—replacing a 12-foot section on the damaged water line while Rivers Street was closed to through traffic. Boone Public Works helped ASU Physical Plant block off the street during the repair, according to Brittain.
On Monday, October 26, ASU Physical Plant staff closed Rivers Street for about two hours to further repair the asphalt and install a new fire hydrant for that section of roadway, according to Brittain.
The water line is once again fully functional.
