Question Around the Office
New Sidewalks and Trash Cans in Boone?

This week, the Town of Boone has been abuzz with Boone Public Works staff, who were working on sidewalks and installing new trash cans. We wondered what was going on.
According to Boone Public Works Director Blake Brown, his staff was hard at work installing sidewalks at three locations in Boone this week, and it’s a sign of things to come—Brown said his crews will be installing more sidewalks at different locations around Boone in the coming months.
Brown said sidewalks were replaced this week on North Depot Street and Appalachian Street, and a new sidewalk is being constructed on Howard Street, in front of The Custard Depot, located at 228 Howard Street.
In September, Brown said his crews will begin installing a new sidewalk in the State Farm Road area. The new sidewalk will begin at Deerfield Road and follow the side of the street where the fire department is located until it reaches Boone Heights Drive, where it will cross the street, continue up State Farm Road and then turn on Shadowline Drive to bring travelers to Shops at Shadowline. Crosswalks will be installed at the intersection of State Farm Road and Boone Heights Drive. The sidewalk work in September is a recommendation of the Alternative Transportation Subcommittee of the town’s Transportation Committee.
Thanks to Public Works, Boone Town Council, the Downtown Boone Development Association and the Boone Community Appearance Commission, 15 new, aesthetically-pleasing trash cans were installed around downtown Boone on Wednesday, August 11. The new trash cans are black with stonework and were installed within the Municipal Service District. Three of the trash cans, which are located in front of Mast General Store, Boone Fire Department and Jimmy Johns, are solar-powered trash compactors, said Brown. Using only solar power, the three compactor-cans can compact six times their own weight, said Brown.
Three recycling center trash cans will also be installed in the coming weeks. Brown said the recycling center trash cans arrived but were mislabeled. The manufacturer is fixing the mistake and sending new products with correct labels in about three weeks, said Brown. When they arrive, they will be installed near Boone Drug, Jimmy Johns and Boone Fire Department.
