Watauga Arts Council Call for Entries
Deadline Is September 1
Watauga Arts Council announces a call for entries for “MEMORY through, from, was, is, to, and, upon, created . . . APPALACHIA,” a juried exhibition developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work at the Jones House Community Center main gallery during October 2009. October is one of the most frequented times in this downtown Boone gallery because of the numbers of visitors to the area during the fall leaf season.
The call for entries is open to all artists 18 years and older who reside in Watauga or adjoining counties. Entries must be original works and created within the past two years. Works may be created in any medium, but must be two-dimensional in orientation, and must not exceed 40 inches in any direction. Pieces must be framed or gallery wrapped with hanging wires and ready to hang. The entry deadline is Tuesday, September 1.
Download an entry form and prospectus from www.watauga-arts.org or send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Watauga Arts Council, PO Box 366 D.T.S., Boone, NC 28607.
Noyes Capehart will jury the exhibit. Capehart began exhibiting at the local, regional and national level in 1958 and has participated in more than a hundred competitive exhibitions and a number of invitational shows. His work has been represented in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Greenville Museum of Art, and the Mint Museum in Charlotte.
Watauga Arts Council galleries are sponsored in part by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff and Grassroots Funds of the North Carolina Arts Council. The WAC offices and galleries are located in downtown Boone at the Jones House Community & Cultural Center, owned by the town of Boone.
27th Spring Exhibition at Carlton Gallery
The Spring Exhibition at the Carlton Gallery includes this painting by Andrew Braitman.
May and June in the High Country signals the beginning of celebrating art with outdoor shows, gallery receptions and art demonstrations. New art is arriving at Carlton Gallery, as the gallery celebrates its first anniversary at 10360 Hwy 105 South in the Grandfather Community near Foscoe. A preview for the upcoming 27th Spring Exhibition can be enjoyed as the gallery prepares for another great season of exhibiting the finest work from the many local and regional artists represented by Carlton Gallery.
Landscapes are popular for the area; therefore the new traditional and contemporary oils on canvas by Andrew Braitman, Eloise Pope, Egi Antonaccio, and Peter Paglen, along with watercolors by Freeman Beard, brighten the gallery walls. New colorful figurative work by Warren Dennis, Kate Worm and Jim Crompton have also been added to the gallery. New works in acrylic mixed media collage and visionary work by Toni Carlton, Debbie Arnold, Vae Hamilton and Dina Lowery are visually exciting and spiritually uplifting. Abstracts in bold primary colors by Charlotte Foust, as well as the bright, realistically rendered florals of Martha Gimlin, along with colorful garden and European landscapes by Helen Farson are featured in the preview.
The preview of the 27th Spring Exhibition not only contains paintings, but also new additions of jewelry, sculpture and pottery. The gallery is located at 10360 Hwy 105 South, 10 miles south of Boone and seven miles north of Linville. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday or by appointment.
