David McCaig is one of the featured landscape artists in The Carlton Gallery’s 27th Spring Exhibition.

Landscapes and Lemonade at Carlton Gallery
The 27th Spring Exhibition is in full swing at Carlton Gallery, with a focus on landscapes in oils on canvas, acrylic, watercolor and black and white photography for the first Avery Tour de Art on Saturday, June 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Lemonade and light refreshments will be served.

The gallery is fortunate to represent local and regional artists Jim Crompton, Egi Antonaccio, Roy Nichols, Andrew Braitman, Bill Farnsworth, Peter Paglen, Eloise Pope, Gina Strumpf, Dina Lowery, Freeman Beard, Helen Farson and David McCaig with landscapes ranging from traditional and abstract oils on canvas, contemporary acrylics rendered with a palette knife to dreamy watercolors.

The lovely scenery of the High Country with its majestic mountains, rural farms, woodland waterfalls, local rivers and streams captured on canvas and paper is brought to life by the artists’ talent and imagination.

Local artist Egi Antonaccio paints realistic scenes with an emphasis on light, creating fine art with a dreamlike quality. Antonaccio also expresses his feelings about the landscape with bright, strong color and courageous strokes. The multi-talented Antonaccio is known for his lively and inspiring teaching methods, which he will utilize in a workshop at the gallery on Monday through Wednesday, June 29 to 30 and July 1. On Saturday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., he will demonstrate landscape painting with his palette knife technique during the Avery Tour de Art.

In addition to an array of landscape paintings, the gallery is pleased to represent the art of Jack Stoddart, whose medium is photography. Working in silver gelatin black-and-white photography, Stoddart produces traditional style prints using sepia toning, oils and pencils.

The Carlton Gallery is located 10 miles south of Boone and seven miles north of Linville on Highway 105 in the Grandfather Community. For more info, call 828-963-4288 or click to www.carltonartgallery.com.

One of the items up for bid at the 2009 Avery Arts Council Mountain Palette Gala on Thursday, July 16, is a necklace by jewelry designer Mia Katrin called “Golden Glory.”

Avery Arts Council Gears Up for Mountain Palette Gala
Spectacular jewelry designs, handcrafted treasures, and one-of-a-kind outdoor experiences—these are only a few of the items up for bid at this year’s Mountain Palette Arts Gala on Thursday, July 16, at Linville Ridge Country Club. The event is an annual benefit bringing the community together in support of the programs and services of the Avery Arts Council.

Last year, more than 175 guests had their choice of hundreds of handcrafted items and specialty services, all of which were donated by area artists and merchants. Gala co-chair Chris Petti reports that jewelry designer Mia Katrin is pulling out all the stops with her beautiful necklace, “Golden Glory,” designed for this year’s affair. The intricate necklace features nine opulent citrine briolettes accented with chocolate pearls in 14 karat gold.  Katrin’s designs are featured in galleries nationally, including the High Country’s own Carlton Gallery and Hardin Fine Jewelry. The “Golden Glory” necklace and companion earrings are on view throughout June at Hardin Fine Jewelry in Banner Elk.

Fine craftsmanship as well as fine art is featured on the auction tables at the gala. Also up for bid are hand-pieced and quilted table runners made by Peggy Hobart and Barbara Piquet from the River Walk Quilt Guild. Hobart and Piquet took their inspiration from designs found along the Avery Quilt Trail, and they reproduced four of the patterns for four one-of-a-kind items with a special Avery connection.

Gala co-chair Rebecca Warner reminds patrons that the auction tables will hold more than beautiful things to view and wear—including great opportunities for golfers and outdoor enthusiasts. Golf packages from the area’s magnificent courses are a perennial favorite, and the exclusive guided hike courtesy of the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy will attract the naturalists in the crowd.

Tickets for the Mountain Palette Gala are $125 per person and can be purchased from the Avery Arts Council. Guests can enjoy cocktails and open bar while perusing the silent auction items, followed by a luxurious dinner prepared by Linville Ridge Country Club’s Chef Derek Smee. A live auction rounds out the evening. Musical entertainment will be by Ottava Rima.

Gala sponsors helping to underwrite the costs of putting on the event are Hood, Hargett, and Associates, Dianne Davant and Associates and Jason and Rebecca Warner. The Avery Arts Council is located at The Cheese House on the campus of Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk.
