This retreat will encourage you to open yourself to a divine truth—that God is engaged with you in a two-way communion. During the weekend, you will reflect on the insights of ancient and modern spiritual mystics and healers through presentation, discussion and contemplative activities. Nonnative, invasive plants may invade native landscapes and ecological habitats, causing harm to native plant and animal species. On Saturday May 17, at 1:00 p.m. at the New River State Park Highway 221 Visitors Center, learn to identify these plants and find out some control methods used to limit their spread during this one-hour slide presentation. Yadkin Valley Clayworks Grand Opening Saturday…
The grand opening of Yadkin Valley Clayworks ceramics studio and classroom is this Saturday, May 17, in Elkin during the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival. Visitors can tour the studio, meet local potters and ceramicists from the Yadkin Valley Craft Guild and sign up for classes that begin in May. The newly renovated studio is the first of the Yadkin Valley Craft Guild’s satellite craft education facilities and is located at the edge of Elkin Recreation Park on Front Street near the Elkin Fire Department. It is 2,500 square feet and boasts 10 wheels, a new heavy duty slab roller, two clay extruders, two new kilns and numerous other items to make a fun and rewarding clay experience for anyone attending classes. Beech Mountain Bike Rides Begin Saturday…
For road biking enthusiasts, Beech Mountain offers 51.2 miles of marked trails over paved road. If you are interested in joining a group to ride the mountain trails, the Town of Beech Mountain Recreation department will sponsor organized rides on the third Saturday of the month, May through October. Gil Adams and Rory Ellington will lead the rides. The first ride on Saturday, May 17, is a 7.55-mile distance. Photovoltaics Workshop May 22 and 23…
This workshop on making energy from the sun is a blend of classroom discussion and hands-on installation experience on simulated rooftops and is designed more for do-it-yourself types and contractors, rather than average homeowners. Participants will follow a typical Sharp Solar installation step-by-step from specification to completion and receive a CD and technical manual that will serve as a highly effective field reference. The workshop will be held on Thursday and Friday, May 22 and 23, in Room 178 of Harper Hall at ASU, and the cost is $190 for the general public and $95 for students.

Equine 101 Class Registration Deadline May 23…
The Watauga Cooperative Extension office is offering an Equine 101 course for beginning horse owners and individuals interested in owning horses. The course also applies to mini-horses, ponies and donkeys. Equine 101 is a six-week, hands-on course that will provide participants with the necessary information to properly care for equines. The fee is $25 per participant fee to cover materials, snacks/refreshments and instructor fees. The class will meet on six consecutive Tuesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. On June 3 is Introduction to the Horse at the Watauga Agricultural Conference Center. All the remaining classes are on-farm demonstrations: June 10; Nutrition and Forages; June 17, Hoof Care; June 24, Health & Vaccinations; July 1, Handling Equine; and July 8, Fencing and Facilities. On Wednesday, June 11, the Chargers and Rechargers Hiking Club heads to Grayson Highlands for a rhododendron hike. Grayson Highlands is about two hours from Boone, and the round trip hike is four moderate to difficult miles from Massie Gap among huge boulders at Rhododendron Gap plus the 2-mile moderate Cabin Creek Trail loop that includes Cabin Creek Falls. Seeing the rhododendrons at the boulders and along the route in this setting is one of the truly memorable experiences in the Southern Appalachians. Considerable sections of the route are rocky and include scrambling over boulders—fun, but strenuous. The trail is rocky with three steep slopes to climb in each direction and an elevation of 5,000 feet. Hikers will enjoy spectacular 360-degree views along part of the Appalachian Trail that crosses the bald and great valley views from Grassy Ridge. No dogs are allowed. Southern Voices 2008 June 19 to 22…
Southern Voices is a reader's theatre production featuring the writing of Southern women and produced and performed by Tessa Carr and Charlotte D'Armond Talbert—two Southern women. The show runs about an hour and 20 minutes and is simply staged without costume or set changes and with scripts in hand for an informal evening. Cloisonné Workshop July 7 to 11…
The history of inlaying colorful materials onto a metal base and securing their position with wire dates back to ancient Egypt, and the art of Chinese fired-enamelware dates back as far as the Yuan Dynasty (1271 to 1368), but was popularized during the Ming Dynasty, with the use of the color blue. Discover this ancient art form of coloring metal at the Cloisonné: Colorful Copper workshop from Monday, July 7, to Friday, July 11. Classes will meet from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in ASU’s Wey Hall, Room 103. Participants will learn traditional methods of enamel applications with a focus on cloisonné for the development of personal imagery. Students will create both wearable and functional art. The second annual Grizzly Bike Race to benefit the Western Youth Network will take place Friday, July 11, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The race is a metric century that will begin and end at Grandfather Mountain with 65 miles and 7,000 feet of climbing in between. The event is held in conjunction with Highland Games. The newest athletic challenge in the High Country is to compete in all three events being held that weekend—The Bear, the Marathon, and the Grizzly. Glass Beads Workshop July 14 to 18…
Wind glowing molten glass around a prepared mandrel, roll it round and round at the top of a flame and eventually you will have a beautifully symmetrical glass bead made just like the professionals. This is what participants will learn to do in this weeklong workshop taught by a glass bead artist with over 10 years of experience. Classes will meet from Monday, July 14, to Friday, July 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in ASU’s Wey Hall, Room 103. By the end of the workshop, each student should walk away with enough beads to make his/her own jewelry and enough knowledge to start a small studio in the garage. Backyard Chicken Workshop Series July 21 to 24…
The third workshop series in Watauga County Cooperative Extension’s Low Impact Living series is Backyard Chickens, a group of workshops targeted to beginning chicken owners and individuals interested in purchasing and raising a small—fewer than 10—flock of chickens. Series participants will learn about different varieties of chickens, how to select the variety right for them, purchasing and raising chicks, housing, nutrition, how to maintain meat birds, how to maintain layers and how to process poultry for meat. The fee is $10 per participant to cover the cost of materials and purchasing birds for the processing workshop. The first three workshops will be held at the Watauga Agricultural Conference Center from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. On Monday, July 21, is Introduction to Backyard Chickens.
