Western Watauga Branch Library Needs Book Donations…
Support the Friends of the Western Watauga Branch Library for their first ever book sale. You can help now by donating your books, videos, DVDs and books on tape to the branch library. The sale will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25, so you have plenty of time to clean off your shelves and bring materials in for someone else to enjoy. Volunteers Needed for Woolly Worm Festival…
Volunteers are needed for ticket sales, ticket taking, worm registration, information booth and cleanup for this year’s Woolly Worm Festival on Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Volunteers get free admission to the Woolly Worm Festival for giving 3 to 4 hours of volunteer time during the weekend festival. Your volunteer time helps support small business, tourism and children’s services in Avery County. The festival is co-sponsored by the Avery County Chamber of Commerce and the Avery County Kiwanis. High Country NAMI Meets October 6…
The National Alliance on Mental Illness will meet Monday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the Lois Harrill Senior Center, 132 Poplar Grove in Boone. Caroline Bond, volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity, will speak about the qualifications needed to apply for a Habitat home, how to apply, current build projects, volunteer opportunities and what’s new with the Habitat ReStore. The Boone Service League’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Deerfield United Methodist Church on Deerfield Road in Boone. All interested women ages 21 to 91 in the High Country are welcome. Refreshments are served at each BSL meeting at 6:30 p.m. and the general business portion of the meeting convenes at 7:00 p.m. Childcare is provided during the meeting.

On Thursday, October 16, the Watauga Unit of North Carolina Retired School Personnel will hold its second meeting of the year at 12:00 p.m. at Deerfield Methodist Church on Deerfield Road. All retired school personnel, staff, teachers and administrators are invited to attend no matter where they were involved in education or on what level. The cost of the meal is $10. Grant Money Available to Fix Pets…
The Watauga Humane Society can now reduce the already low cost to fix dogs and cats, thanks to grants from the Town of Boone and Watauga County. If you cannot afford to fix your pets, call the Watauga Humane Society at 828-264-7865. You must be a Watauga County resident to use grant money, but this low-cost program is open to everyone. Watauga County Announces Electronic Recycling Program…
Residents can now bring their unwanted electronic equipment to the Recycling Center at the old landfill, located at 336 Landfill Road in Boone off Highway 421, behind the Nissan dealership, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Red Cross Offers Choking Response Class for Restaurant Employees…
The Watauga County Red Cross is offering a new program for restaurant staff: choking prevention training. For $10 per student, Red Cross representatives will come to a restaurant and in one hour or less fully train the staff is handling adult and child choking situations.
