Bona Fide Southern-Fried Rail Jam & Competition
Although it may seem an unlikely setting, the parking lot of the Boone Mall will play host this Saturday to a high-flying skier and snowboarder competition. The inaugural Bona Fide Southern-Fried Rail Jam & Competition, organized by folks from Appalachian Ski Mountain’s Terrain Park, will be open to guys, gals and grommets (beginners) and will run from 3:00 until 9:00 p.m.[full story]
Area Events Commemorate King Legacy
The official Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday is Monday, January 16, but area events commemorating the civil rights leader’s life and legacy will continue for more than week at a variety of venues. The lineup is as diverse as the message, featuring music, poetry, art, dance, church services, jazz and a presentation by a nationally prominent African American political activist and commentator. County Commissioners Approve MLK Holiday
At a special meeting on Wednesday morning, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a motion by Board Chair Jim Deal to designate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a holiday for all county employees. [full story]
MLK Dance Celebration in Ashe County on Monday
The Ashe County Arts Council is presenting the 4th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration featuring Chuck Davis and the African-American Dance Ensemble at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 16. The performance is sponsored by the Ashe County Arts Council and will take place at the Ashe County Arts Center in West Jefferson. Admission is free. [full story]

Although Congressman John Conyers introduced a bill to create a Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday just four days after King’s assassination in 1968, it was 15 years before President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law making the third Monday of January a national holiday commemorating the civil rights leader.[full story]
Schools To Celebrate Unity Week
Students throughout Watauga County will enjoy adventures in diversity during Unity Week, in conjunction with I Have a Dream Week and the Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration. In an area where the demographics are almost solidly white, many students lack exposure to different ethnicities. Boone Comprehensive Plan: Just the First Step
After two years of review and revision, the Boone Area Planning Commission has almost completed work on the Boone Comprehensive Plan update. A joint meeting between the Planning Commission and the Boone Town Council last Monday night provided an opportunity for members of the public to comment on any aspect of the plan—its scope, objectives, growth and development policies, and strategic action items. It has become a rite of spring, an annual tradition, a gathering of souls from all over the world and a musical event second to none. Indeed, a new year brings us another long and wonderful weekend of music known as MerleFest.
What About the Unity Festival?
The I Have a Dream Task Force is planning the annual unity festival; it just won’t be taking place next week. The festival will be happening in early April instead, in a partnership with Appalachian State University’s Diversity Celebration.
