Empty Bowls Fundraiser Helps the Hungry
Worldwide, an estimated 815 million people are undernourished. In Appalachia alone, about 23 percent of the population does not get enough food to eat, according to studies by nutritionist David Holben. Poverty is the primary cause of hunger.
Women’s Leadership Conference This Saturday
The 2006 Women’s Leadership Conference will take place this Saturday, March 4, in the Plemmons Student Union on the campus of ASU. he conference, which usually draws between 100 and 200 women, will begin at noon and end at 6:30 p.m.
Blowing Rock Stage Company Now Offering Spring Theatre Classes
The TOPs program at the Blowing Rock Stage Company is offering spring theater classes for grades K-12. The “Moving Tales” series will focus on integrating expressive and interpretive movement with poetry and music.

Take to the Trails with Chargers & Rechargers Hiking Club
The Chargers and Rechargers Hiking Club is an informal group of hiking enthusiasts in the western and northwestern mountains of North Carolina. Most of the membership lives in the area from Burnsville to Boone. Most hikes are held on Saturday and Wednesday and last four to five hours. Hikes range in difficulty from easy to strenuous, and both club members and nonmembers are welcome on hikes.

The first-ever Read Across America Day was held on March 2, 1998. In May 1997, a small reading taskforce at the National Education Association came up with the big idea to create a day to celebrate reading. They dubbed it NEA's Read Across America and decided to celebrate it on Dr. Seuss's birthday. Read Across America has grown to become the nation’s largest reading celebration.
Area Churches Announce Interdenominational Worship Services
Beginning next Wednesday, March 8, the ministers and congregations of Boone area churches cordially invite members of the community to attend the 2006 interdenominational community Lent and Easter worship services.
