TOP NEWS STORIES

Almost 2,000 patriotic people gathered at John and Susan Turchin’s The Lodges at Eagles Nest last Saturday, July 1, to take part in the inaugural Red, White and Blue Weekend—a fundraiser for the Banner Elk Fire Department. From midday Saturday to 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, locals and visitors danced to their heart’s content to the sounds of En Vogue and other talented musicians, hailing from such bands as Eric Clapton’s and Bob Seger’s. “It was quite an event,” added Turchin. “It was greater than we ever expected. And it’s only the beginning; there’ll be plenty of more parties to come.” Although the final tally has yet to be determined, the Turchins’ party raised over $30,000 for the Banner Elk Fire Department, which will be used to help purchase a new fire truck.
