It was a perfect day. More than 300 locals, visitors, skateboarders of all ages and dignitaries gathered at the Appalachian Skatepark on Saturday, July 8, to celebrate the grand opening of the High Country’s newest recreation complex and tourist destination. After positive comments from Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson, Watauga County Commissioners Jim Deal and Keith Honeycutt, Boone Town Council member Bunk Spann and Watauga County Sheriff Mark Shook, members of the Appalachian Skatepark Council skated through the ceremonial ribbon, and the Appalachian Skatepark officially opened to the public. The festivities included live music, food, skate competitions and prizes. With the opening of the skatepark, ‘boarders finally have a safe and legal place to skate in the High Country.
