The unofficial mascot of this year’s App Summer, Ladybird Farthing, has, along with her eggs, been the subject of “DuckWatch 2006.” Thousands of festival patrons have filed past the family on their way inside Farthing Auditorium for concerts since the feathered friend relocated from a nest near Wey Hall in June. On Monday morning, within her newfound home below the awning that covers the entrance to Farthing Auditorium, Ladybird hatched five ducklings. And those five new additions to the Appalachian family might be the luckiest waterfowl in the region due to the three housekeepers that bring them daily offerings of rice cakes, water, bread and crackers. Ladybird appreciates the offerings; now, she doesn’t have to commute to the Duck Pond quite as much. The housekeepers have also put some orange cones around Ladybird and her ducklings as to protect their impromptu mascot from the ASU orientation buses that often invade Ladybird’s newly claimed habitat. Ladybird shows no signs of leaving, thus the DuckWatch 2006 continues… Photo by Corinne Saunders Birds Flock to Sanford Hall
