Guarding the Globe

A standing room only crowd attended the first of three U.S. Forest Service info sessions in Blowing Rock Wednesday, with similar attendance at the other two sessions, and attendees were overwhelmingly opposed to the Forest Service’s proposal to log 231 acres of the Pisgah National Forest in the Globe area. Residents were particularly angered that the Forest Service ran the public notice about the environmental impact statement for the proposed logging in The McDowell News rather than in a local paper. On Thursday morning, the Blowing Rock Town Council will vote on a resolution in opposition to the plan, and anti-logging organizers say they are ready to litigate. To become a part of the official record, public comments on the plan must be submitted to the Forest Service by Thursday, August 10.
