The Town of Boone held a special public hearing at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night at the Watauga County Courthouse to obtain citizen input on the proposed regulations for steep slope development.

An estimated 400+ people attended the public hearing, and more than 60 speakers offered comments on the proposals—with the vast majority of the comments opposed to specific aspects of the proposed regulations.

At the close of the public hearing, the members of the Boone Town Council voted to send the proposed text amendments back to Town Attorney Sam Furgiuele for additional work. Among other changes, the council directed Furgiuele to eliminate the geologic hazard and viewshed protection maps, to define steep slopes as those of 30 percent or greater and to eliminate the minimum lot size and maximum land disturbance areas for single-family homes.
