Mrs. Ross's class at Newland Elementary recently baked apple pies for friends of their classroom, and in this photo, Briar Hoover places the top crust on one of the pies. Also assisting, but not shown, Taner Newsome helped measure ingredients, Kori Lawson peeled apples, Cody Jester added butter to the apples before the crusts went down and Zach Pritchard placed peelings in water to cook down for jelly. The class took a trip to Coffey's Orchard in Boone to purchase the apples. The next week, the boys peeled the apples, placed them in the crusts with cinnamon and butter and baked them. Leftover peelings and cores were used to make apple jelly. The pies were delicious. The classroom cooking program is designed to provide students with hands-on learning experiences in many curriculum areas and to build self-esteem through earned responsibilities. The program relies entirely on grant funding and contributions. Mrs. Ross invites community members to share interesting recipes with the boys or to come prepare a dish with them. At the end of the year, the class will compile a cookbook of the year's recipes that may be offered to the public. For more info, call Susan Ross at Newland Elementary at 828-733-4911.
