Contests Offer Multiple Chances for Fame and Glory

If you’re an artist, about the only thing better than selling your work is winning an award for it. Submission deadlines for four local competitions are coming up soon, and you can’t win if you don’t enter, so get your photos, sculptures and paintings ready to go.
Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition Submission Deadline: February 3
The fourth annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition provides both amateur and professional photographers the opportunity to showcase their interpretation of the unique character, people, places, and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians. The submission deadline for entries is Saturday, February 3, by 6:00 p.m.
Categories for the competition include adventure, Blue Ridge Parkway, culture, environment, flora/fauna and landscape. The entry fee is $5 per entry and can be paid by check, money order, cash, VISA or MasterCard. Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition Submission Deadline: February 9Sculptors interested in entering the 21st Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition for 2007-2008 can download and complete the 21st Rosen Prospectus & Entry Form that contains all information and instructions pertaining to the 2007-2008 competition. To access the form, click to www.rosensculpture.org/artists/. All entries must be received by February 9 to be considered for the competition. Wine Festival Art Submission Deadline: March 1
The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce invites all interested artists to submit original artwork for the 2008 Blue Ridge Wine Festival Art Competition. According to Charles Hardin, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, the artwork chosen to represent next year’s Blue Ridge Wine Festival will be used primarily to produce posters and t-shirts, although other merchandising ideas are being considered. The original artwork will be auctioned at the VIP Charity Reserve Gala during the event to raise money for the festival’s designated charity. The winning artist will also be asked to sign posters at the Grand Cru Wine Tasting, where an opportunity will be provided to showcase other works of art. In addition, the artist will be highlighted in all public relations conducted for the event. Halpert Biennial ‘07 Deadline for Entries: April 13
The Halpert Biennial ’07—part of An Appalachian Summer Festival—is a national juried visual art competition and exhibition open to all two-dimensional visual artists over the age of 18 and currently residing in the United States. Awards for 2007 will total $5,000. Terry Suhre, director of Gallery 210 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis will serve as this year's juror.
Interested artists need to click to www.turchincenter.org/halpertbiennial/artists to download the Halpert Biennial Prospectus & Entry Form. The prospectus contains entry guidelines and procedures.
