Season Passes On Sale Now
Story by Kathleen McFadden
With its new home, the Blowing Rock Stage Company is gearing up to present its first full year of productions at the Mariam and Robert Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock. The 2007 season includes nine shows, including five musicals, two world premieres and a Tennessee Williams classic. According to Stage Company General Manager Robert Miller, Jr., Producing Artistic Director Ken Kay has not yet cast the productions—that process will begin next month—but season passes are now on sale, and individual tickets go on sale in early February.
All show titles and dates are subject to change, but here’s what’s currently on the schedule from May through December.
May 30 to June 16: Moses Cone: The Denim King
The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation commissioned this world premiere musical written by Dr. Janet Barton Speer of Lees-McRae College and based on the book A Mansion in the Mountains by Phillip Noblitt. The musical tells the story of the man who made a fortune in denim and built Flat Top Manor in Blowing Rock. Music and lyrics are by John Thomas Oaks.
June 20 to July 8: Golf: The Musical
The comic sketches and 18 songs of this hysterical Off-Broadway revue focus on the world of golf.
July 11 to July 21: Deathtrap
This Ira Levin play, first produced in 1958, holds the record as the longest running thriller in Broadway history. Levin is the author of Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives.
July 25 to August 12: Keep on the Sunny Side
This country musical tale features the songs and story of the Carter Family. Originally commissioned by the Barter Theatre, the musical evokes the emotions of the famous family.
August 15 to September 2: God's Favorite
This Neil Simon comedy is based on the book of Job and tells the story of family man Joe Benjamin who must go through hell to settle a bet between God and the Devil.
September 5 to September 16: Jan Karon's Journey to Mitford
Another BRSC world premiere, this play by Robert Inman and Kenneth Kay is based on Jan Karon's Mitford series and will be the centerpiece of Blowing Rock’s Mitford Days celebration in the early fall.
October 10 to October 21: The Glass Menagerie
This American classic by Tennessee Williams explores the lives of the Wingfields—mother Amanda and her children Tom and Laura. Amanda’s single-minded pursuit of a suitor for her shy daughter leads to familial conflict and pain.
October 24 to November 11: Pump Boys & Dinettes
The characters in this rock 'n roll, country and blues musical revue are four guys who pump gas and two sisters who are the waitress/proprietors of the diner across the street.
November 28 to December 16: The Christmas Bus
This holiday musical by Robert Inman is based on his book of the same name.
