Who hasn’t read this book? More than once. And lived Jane’s experiences of sorrow, hope, shock and longing?
After an acclaimed run in London’s West End, The Acting Company—with director Davis McCallum—will present the American premiere of Polly Teale’s groundbreaking adaptation of Jane Eyre on Friday, February 16, at 8:00 p.m., in Farthing Auditorium.
Originally produced by the world-class Shared Experience company, Jane Eyre is Charlotte Brontë’s extraordinary coming-of-age story of one of literature’s most independent and strong-willed women. Recognized as a masterpiece when it was published in 1847, Jane Eyre remains a startlingly modern blend of passion, romance and suspense. Although Jane is obscure and plain, locked in the attic of her imagination is a passionate and wild woman full of longing. For the first time, she has fallen in love, and her orderly world is threatened.
Teale’s stunning visual imagery and powerful style transform Brontë's novel into deeply affecting drama. The Guardian of London has praised Teale’s adaptation, declaring that it “single handedly reinvented the page to stage genre.”
With the presentation of Jane Eyre, The Acting Company continues its 34-year tradition of bringing touring classical productions, talented young actors and teaching artists into communities across America. The Acting Company has performed 125 productions for more than 3 million people in 48 states and nine foreign countries. Coveted honors earned by The Acting Company include Excellence in Theater by the TONY’s, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and Citibank’s Excellence in Education Award.
Prior to the evening performance, The Acting Company will conduct a free lecture class for the public, "Page to Stage," on February 16, from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m., in IG Greer Auditorium. The lecture will provide valuable background information and insight into the Jane Eyre production, including the historical context of the play, how the life of Charlotte Brontë influenced the life of her heroine, how the vision of the novel was translated to stage and how music underscoring a play can profoundly impact overall production.
The performance of Jane Eyre is part of the 2006-07 Performing Arts Series, presented by ASU’s Office of Arts and Cultural Programs. Advance tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and ASU faculty and staff, and $8 for all students. Ticket prices increase at the door on the night of the show.
