ASU Presents Comedy Moon Over Buffalo February 14 to 18

Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present the comedy Moon Over Buffalo in the Valborg Theatre Wednesday, February 14, to Saturday, February 17, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 19, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students and can be purchased at the Valborg Theatre Box Office or online at www.theatre.appstate.edu. Playwright Ken Ludwig’s Broadway hits include Crazy for You, Lend Me a Tenor and Sullivan and Gilbert. Moon Over Buffalo premiered on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre and featured Carol Burnett and Phillip Bosco as Charlotte and George Hay. The Boston Herald wrote: “The play is nothing less than a love letter to live theater.”

The comedy is set in 1953. Aging theatre stars George and Charlotte Hay are in repertory in Buffalo, N.Y. Spirits rise as famed movie director Frank Capra telephones, asking to see their performances in Private Lives and Cyrano de Bergerac to consider them for his new movie. Miscommunications, mistaken identities and mayhem ensue, and George lands in hot water when a company member unexpectedly finds herself “expecting.” Will Charlotte leave George? Will George be sober enough to perform? Is their daughter getting married or back on stage? Is there a clandestine affair with an ingénue? Will the show go on?

Faculty member Joel Williams directs the production. The faculty production staff includes John Marty as lighting designer and Sue Williams a costume designer. Theatre design and technology major Angie Lingerfelt is scenic designer, while sound design is by Jordan Lance, a senior music major/theatre minor.

The Moon Over Buffalo cast includes senior theatre major Raymond Dillard and junior theatre performance major Anna Gettles as George and Charlotte Hay, Nate Hawkins as Richard, sophomore theatre major Amanda McNiece as Eileen, senior theatre major Whitney Thore as Ethel, junior theatre major Shawn Stoner as Howard, senior theatre major Hilary Edwards as Rosalind and theatre minor Tom Valentine as Paul.
