ASU Alumnus on Sideline for the Bears

When you’re watching Super Bowl XLI this Sunday, be sure to keep an eye peeled for Steven Wilks, the Chicago Bears defensive backs coach. Wilks was a defensive back at Appalachian State University from 1987-91, and he is in his first season with Chicago.

The Bears hired Wilks in February 2006 after he coached at the college level for 11 years.

During his college football career at Appalachian, Wilks recorded 103 career tackles with four interceptions and four blocked kicks. The Mountaineers qualified for the NCAA I-AA playoffs in 1989 and 1991 with Wilks playing a contributory role. He went to training camp with the Seattle Seahawks in 1992 and played for the Charlotte Rage of the Arena Football League in 1993 as a defensive back and wide receiver. The Charlotte native holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from ASU.
