Give A Show Of Support at Espresso News Friday

Benefit Concert Will Help Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary and Turtle Island

Story by Celeste von Mangan

A benefit concert coordinated by musician Melissa Reaves will be held Friday, February 9, beginning promptly at 8:00 p.m. at Espresso News on Howard Street in downtown Boone. Loosely titled A Show of Support, the concert proceeds will be split between Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary and Turtle Island Preserve.

Leslie Hayhurst is the founder and director of Genesis, a haven for injured, orphaned and abused animals. Founded in 1993, Genesis offers rescue of injured wildlife 24 hours a day, and the sanctuary and hospital provide rehabilitation, treatment and release of injured and orphaned wildlife. Genesis provides guided tours and educational programs and is open to the public every day from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. All permanent wild animals at Genesis have disabilities that prevent them from being released back into the wild. Hayhurst is a registered nurse with more than 20 years of wildlife rehabilitation experience. For more info about Genesis, click to wwwgenesiswildlife.org.

Eustace Conway is the founder of Turtle Island Preserve, a 1,000-acre tract of pristine wilderness where earth stewardship is practiced and taught. Located in a remote valley, Turtle Island Preserve offers programs in lifestyle practices drawn from our forbearers’ time, including workshops, horse and buggy rides, summer camps and internships. Turtle Island farm is oriented to the basic foundation of gardens, milk goats, making butter, soap, bowls, spoons and tools. Conway’s maternal grandfather founded Camp Sequoyah in 1924, and Turtle Island is a continuation of his family heritage. Conway recently lost his home to fire. “There will be tables with separate representatives from both Turtle Island and Genesis with information and donation jars, ”said Iva Nasr, one of the organizers. “They both offer very special services, very essential services—not just to our community, but to our world. Eustace lost his home to fire; he is involved in service to the community and the benefit is also to help a fellow human being. Patrons can come and express their support. Espresso News offers a venue that allows earlier hours and it costs $5 at the door.”

The low-key event features musicians Jay Brown, Andy Page, Amy Steinberg, Melissa Reaves and Tony Reece.
