Boone Service League Scholarship Application Deadline March 23

Students in Avery, Ashe, Watauga Eligible

The Boone Service League, a community service organization of local women, is now accepting applications for the annual Boone Service League High School Scholarship(s). This year, Boone Service League will award $2,500 in scholarship money to interested high school seniors planning to pursue an undergraduate degree at a university or college in fall 2007. Applications will be accepted online only and are open to students in Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. Those interested in applying can do so by clicking to booneserviceleague.org and clicking the Scholarships tab.

The deadline for all applications is Friday, March 23, and no applications will be accepted after this date. The winners will be contacted during the week of April 9. Winners and one guest are invited, but not required, to attend the Boone Service League’s annual Fashion Show and Silent Auction on Saturday, April 21, at the Broyhill Conference Center so that members and their guests can express their congratulations and encouragement to the winner(s).

Applicants should select one of the following two prompts and prepare an essay not to exceed 500 words:

• If you were a member of a service organization and given $5,000 and a team of five members, how would you use these resources to meet a need in the High Country?

• Describe one service activity in which you participated in the past 12 months. Were you a leader or a follower? How did you obtain the resources you needed and how did a person(s) benefit from you efforts? How were you changed as a result of your efforts?

The Boone Service League suggests that applicants prepare their essays in a word processing program using the word count tool, and copy and paste the essay into the application. Applicants will receive a confirmation within 48 hours of the receipt of their applications. If you do not receive a confirmation, email Michaele Haas, Scholarship Committee chairman, at haas4340@bellsouth.net.
