Blue Ridge Community Theatre will present two shows this spring, Dearly Departed and Hello, Dolly!
Dearly Departed, a comedy by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones, will be presented as a dinner theater. The play is about the Bible Belt kin of Bud Turpin. They’ve got a funeral to plan and—in between the feuds, marital flings and Macaroni and Ham Loaf Surprise—it may escalate into a multiple-coffin memorial service. By the time the Turpins sort through the hangovers, money problems and headstone engraving options, they’ve learned that coping with life’s losses can turn out to be drop-dead fun.
Directed by Trimella Chaney, the play will be presented Friday, March 9, and Saturday, March 10, at Legends on the ASU campus. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., with dining from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Bandanas will cater and include barbecue or chicken with a choice of vegetable and bread. Intermission will include a dessert and coffee.
Tickets are $25 and are available online at www.brctnc.org. Tickets are also available at Deerfield Pharmacy and Boone Drug at New Market Center. Tables will seat six to eight; seating is limited to 300 per show.
The Tony award-winning Hello, Dolly!, one of the most popular Broadway musicals ever, will be presented Friday, March 30, through Sunday, April 1.
The show takes place in early 20th-century New York City and concerns widowed matchmaker Dolly Levi, bachelor Yonkers “half-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder who has engaged Dolly to make a match for him and several other couples who, despite the web of romantic complications Dolly weaves, miraculously end up matched to the right people.
Performances will be held at Farthing Auditorium at ASU. Showtimes are 7:00 p.m. on March 30; 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on March 31; and 2:00 p.m. on April 1.
Directed by Janet Barton Speer, the show features Burlene Franklin as Dolly, Joe Clark as Horace, Carlos Garcia as Cornelius, Megan Rey as Irene, Matthew Lucas as Ambrose, John Warrick as Barnaby, Rebecca Mayes as Ernestina, Stephanie Deal as Minnie and Lilly Nelson as Ermengarde.
The show is sponsored in part by the Watauga County Arts Council and Grassroots Funds of the N.C. Arts Council.
Tickets are available online at www.brctnc.org.
