Nine teachers in the Watauga County Schools were recognized at the February 12 meeting of the Board of Education for having earned National Board Certification, the highest and most demanding credential available in the teaching profession. The newly certified teachers are (left to right) Christy Laws of Cove Creek, Alison Garrett of Watauga High School, Patti Sjostrand of Bethel, Harriett Stepuch of Valle Crucis, Leigh Lyall of Watauga High School, Natalie Willis of Parkway, Lisa Moody of Cove Creek, Candice Trexler of Hardin Park and Anne Donadio of Cove Creek. Fifty-eight Watauga County Schools teachers and administrators have National Board Certification, representing approximately 14 percent of the total teachers and administrators in the system and ranking Watauga County Schools as the fifteenth highest proportion of board-certified staff in the 115 public school systems in North Carolina.
