Proceeds Benefit Local Special Olympics
Story by David Brewer
There’s no time like the middle of February to take a dip in a cool mountain pond, and nobody knows that better than members of area law enforcement agencies. On Thursday, February 22, the 9th Annual Polar Plunge to benefit Watauga County Special Olympics will take place at ASU’s Duck Pond.
Sponsored by the ASU Police Department, Boone Police Department, Blowing Rock Police Department, Appalachian Regional Health Care System Police Department, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and Watauga County Parks and Recreation Department, the icy festivities will begin with registration at 3:00 p.m. followed by the plunge at 4:00 p.m.
In the previous eight years, the Polar Plunge has raised more than $50,000 for Special Olympics. All of the money raised for the plunge will stay in Watauga County to support local athletes. In 2006, 229 people took the plunge, raising more than $9,200 for Watauga County Special Olympics.
According to ASU Police Department Major Larry Foster, fundraising efforts are on track again thiss year.
“We’re excited about this year’s plunge,” said Foster, a five-time plunger. “I’m hoping it won’t be too cold.”
Recalling the year when organizers had to use a backhoe to break through four inches of ice to hold the event, Foster said that the water temperature usually hovers around an exciting 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
Organizers are asking potential plungers to donate $25. Groups of five or more can take the plunge for a donation of $20 per person. Prizes will be awarded for the most extreme costume (male & female), as well as for the top fundraising group and individual. All plungers will receive a Polar Plunge beach towel.
Those interested in taking part in the Polar Plunge or sponsoring a plunger should contact Keron Poteat, Watauga County Special Olympics Coordinator by calling 828-264-9511 or any Watauga County Law Enforcement agencies sponsoring the event.
Even if you aren’t taking the plunge, organizers encourage both students and local citizens to come out and enjoy the fun.
