Story by David Brewer
After three successful fundraising concerts held during January and February, the Boone Music Scene project has not only managed to get off the ground—it is off to a running start.
Thanks to the efforts of the 10 local bands that donated their time and talents, the Boone Music Scene project raised nearly $2,000. According to project organizer Justin Butler, the songs for the disc have all been gathered and will be mastered for the final product starting in March.
Banana da Terra drummer and local artist Joel Lancaster is currently working on cover art for the CD. Butler plans to release the finished product the first weekend in April.
“The turnouts were great; the shows went great,” said Butler. “Everybody did really well.”
Much like the CD, the Boone Music Scene showcases were prime examples of the musical diversity that exists locally. With reggae, rock, country and hip-hop acts sharing the same bill, fans were generally receptive, embracing the different styles and sounds emanating from area stages.
Since its January launch, the Boone Music Scene project has garnered the attention of local music fans and musicians, as well as many bands outside the High Country. The project has also become the subject of a documentary being filmed by three ASU students that will air on the Mountain Television Network in the coming months.
Though Butler’s main focus has been to organize the compilation CD that he plans on distributing to college radio stations across the south, the creating of the project instantly became a networking tool. The Boone Music Scene project’s MySpace page has received over a thousand hits from bands and music fans all over North Carolina and beyond.
Though the funding is in place for the first round of CDs to be produced, shows are still being scheduled under the Boone Music Scene moniker. On Friday, February 23, local acoustic acts Southern Exposure and the Wehutty Mudpuppies will perform the fourth Boone Music Scene showcase at Moon Shine Café & Lounge.
Butler is also in the process of planning a celebratory CD release party to coincide with the arrival of the disc.
