Cotillion Wraps Up Winter Session

High Country Cotillion wrapped up its inaugural winter session on Thursday, February 15, with the Valentine’s Gala dinner dance for 7th through 10th graders featuring a father/daughter and mother/son dance at the Broyhill Inn on the ASU campus.

The festivities began on Wednesday night as High Country Cotillion families were treated to High Country Cotillion Night at the ASU basketball doubleheader.

The Valentine’s Gala included some wonderful highlights and some great surprises. The highlights included a great dinner prepared by the fine Broyhill Inn kitchen staff. Following dinner, High Country Cotillion’s guests of honor, Whitney Baker, the vice president of Student Government for Appalachian State University and Billy Riddle, star defensive back for the championship ASU football team, spoke to the cotillion attendees on the subject of Setting High Standards and Goals for Life after High School. Billy Riddle brought two team members with him to say hello to the students: offensive team captain Matt Eisenhower and offensive lineman John Holt.

The biggest surprise of the evening occurred after the team players finished speaking, when ASU Football Head Coach Jerry Moore made an unannounced appearance. Coach Moore held the cotillion attendees’ undivided attention as he spoke to them about principles he lives by: setting priorities, leading by example, stressing hard work, being fair, leading a disciplined life and choosing friends wisely. He was received very warmly as were all the guests of honor.

The students then hit the dance floor for an hour of dancing before the dance with parents began. Cotillion parents danced and socialized for another hour until the evening and the High Country Cotillion winter season came to a close.

The Spring Session of High Country Cotillion kicks off Thursday, March 1, and the registration deadline to avoid a late registration fee is Monday, February 26. Contact High Country Cotillion for information at 828-297-3133 or email at 3carlton@gte.net.
