Thirty-six competitors from cities all over North Carolina showed up at the 2007 inaugural ICE BOWL disc golf competition last Sunday, February 17, raising $933.20 for the Ashe County Partnership for Children.
“All in all it was a great day,” said Todd Patoprsty, ICE BOWL coordinator. “Everyone had fun, spoke very complimentary of the new course and was super generous and respectful throughout the event.”
Participants came from Wilmington, Asheville, Brevard, Kingsport, Tenn., Marion, Va., Yadkinville, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Charlotte and Boone to compete in the singles and doubles tournament.
“Even though it was cold, at least we didn’t have the strong winds we usually have this time of year,” said Patoprsty. “At registration, the temperature was 22 degrees. It was a beautiful day to have an ICE BOWL. Light snow showers throughout the day were quite a treat for some of the flatlanders in attendance.”
Todd and Wendy Patoprsty promoted and directed the 2007 ICE BOWL.
Sponsors were Ashe County Parks and Recreation, INNOVA Disc Golf, Michaels 102 North Restaurant, Smokey Mountain Barbeque, Hobby Barn, Nations Inn, Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, Pizza Hut, Los Arcoiris Mexican Restaurant, Prime Sirloin Family Steakhouse and Coyote Kitchen.
This spring, Patoprsty hopes to have the time to organize and formalize the High Country Disc Golf Club and to have other fundraising events, host clinics, hold weekly and monthly events, schedule work days and also host the inaugural High Country sanctioned PDGA Tournament set for July 14 and 15 that will likely be called the High Country Throwdown. The players’ field for that event will be limited to 90 participants.
