Story by David Brewer
After a successful first year, organizers of the Leola Street Community Garden are preparing for 2007. After receiving a two-year extension on the lease granted by the Town of Boone in January, the group is searching for community members to get involved during 2007.
Participants in the Leola Street Garden meet once a month at the garden (or at various indoor locations depending on the weather) to do work maintenance work at the garden and organize fundraising and community outreach.
The group’s next meeting will take place at the garden on Monday, March 5 at 6:00 p.m. In the event of bad weather, the meeting will be moved to Earth Fare.
Upcoming projects for the Community Garden include beautifying the garden area, marking paths between plots, managing weeds, installing benches and developing the children’s garden in conjunction with Two Rivers Charter School.
Those who don't want to do physical work but would like to be involved in the group can join the site plan, fundraising or outreach committees.
Citizens simply wanting to purchase a garden space to grow food can come to any upcoming work date. Prices for plots are $20 for a 10- by 15-foot, $30 for a 20- by 14-foot and $40 for a 20- by 30-foot garden space.
The next Community Garden work date will take place at the garden on Saturday, February 24, when participants will perform soil sample tests. All work dates begin at 11:00 a.m.
