Audition dates have been set for Ashe County Little Theatre’s summer musical, Into the Woods. Directed by Rebecca Herman and produced by Jane Lonon, this summer’s production is scheduled to run from June 21 through June 25.
Auditions will be held on Monday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ashe Civic Center. Individuals will be asked to complete readings from the script and to sing a selection of their choice. An accompanist will be provided.
Into the Woods is based on a book by James Lapine and features a score by Stephen Sondheim. The original production of Into the Woods opened on Broadway in November 1987 and ran for 804 performances. It won the 1988 Drama Critic’s Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical and a Tony award for Best Score.
The storyline intertwines the fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood. Underpinning this fusion of fairy tales is the quest of the Baker and the Baker’s Wife. Cursed with childlessness by a witch, the Baker and his wife must go into the woods to undo the curse. Little do they know how complicated their lives, and the lives of their fellow fairy tale characters, will become once their wishes are granted.
The cast includes seven men, eight women and one girl. These characters include the Baker and the Baker’s wife who desperately want a child and will stop at nothing to reverse the witch’s curse, the Witch, Jack and his mother, Cinderella, her evil stepmother and two stepsisters, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella’s Prince, Rapunzel’s Prince, a wolf and the narrator who doubles as the mysterious man.
