Story by David Brewer
Ditch that winter coat and grab your sandals as you head to King Street for the Downtown Boone Development Association’s monthly art crawl on Friday, April 6. Whether you’re a first time art crawler, gallery veteran or jaded art critic, you can enjoy free refreshments, specials and lots of new work at galleries and shops from talented artists both young and old.
On April 6, the Turchin Center will open an exhibit featuring the work of Iowa City resident and recently retired University of Iowa professor Joseph Patrick. Spending summers in Oaxaca, Mexico with his wife Genie, Patrick has captured the city’s domestic patios, gardens and other everyday locations with both oil and watercolor. The artist’s use of dramatic lines, shapes and lighting give his works a sense of realism and beauty.
Patrick’s exhibit will be on display through July 28.
Watauga Arts Council’s Mazie Jones and Open Door galleries will host new exhibits from Tuesday, April 3, to Friday, April 27. A reception to welcome the exhibits will be held Friday, April 6, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
The Mazie Jones Gallery will feature work submitted by Caldwell Community College students and community members whose artwork appears in the latest edition of Branches, the college’s literary magazine.
The Children’s Council has coordinated the work of children who attend Watauga County Public Schools, highlighting the creativity of the youngest members of pre-kindergarten classes for the latest exhibit in the Open Door Gallery.
Watauga Arts Council exhibits are sponsored by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff.
