The Kappa Delta sorority at Appalachian State University held its 15th annual all-you-can-eat Pancake Dinner on Wednesday, March 28, at the Broyhill Inn.
Eighty percent of the proceeds from the dinner remain in Watauga County, benefiting the Watauga Children’s Council. The remaining 20 percent goes to Prevent Child Abuse America (PCA America), the sorority’s national philanthropy, for nationwide public awareness programs.
For the past several years, the dinner has been named ASU’s most successful philanthropic event and has won the Greek Award for best philanthropy two years running. Last year’s total was nearly $15,000. For the past two years, Kappa Delta has raised more than $10,000 for the Children’s Council.
Event chair Cara Kelly said this total “set the standard pretty high.” The sorority’s goal is to match and break this previous record.
Sisters of Appalachian State’s Kappa Delta chapter voted on the programs of the Children’s Council that will receive the financial donation. Prior to the dinner, a representative from Watauga Children’s Council met with the sorority to help decide how the money will be distributed. The sisters agreed that the majority of the gift should fund the Parents as Teachers program; the program’s grant will expire in the fall.
Meeting with the Children’s Council representative was important because it helped “establish what we were working for—it put a face with a name,” said Kelly.
The sorority worked hard to promote the event in the community, contacting family and friends and posting notices on campus and in other locations in Boone. They wanted to step up the community awareness of the event and “get more in touch with the Watauga community because it benefits the children of this community,” Kelly said.
