ARTIC APRIL

A lone fisherman confronts the heavy April snow that fell across the High Country Saturday morning while tracking the first trout of the season. After temperatures broke 70 degrees in Boone for much of the end of March and beginning of April, Mother Nature changed her tune over the weekend, ushering in temperatures 30 degrees colder than normal across the High Country with record lows on Easter morning. Over the weekend, temperatures dipped to 16 degrees in Boone with 2 to 4 inches of snow, to 6 degrees on Beech Mountain with 6 inches of snow and to 9 degrees on Grandfather Mountain with 9.2 inches of snow. Despite the record cold, dozens of local anglers took to the creeks, streams, lakes and rivers of the High Country Saturday and Sunday for the opening of trout season and the 29th annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby.
