The Children’s Council Celebrates 30 Years of Service

Reception Planned for April 24

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Children’s Council, a reception will be held at the Jones House on Tuesday, April 24, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the public is invited.

The Children’s Council serves the needs of children and families of Watauga County. Founded in 1977 as a private nonprofit, CCWC has provided programs targeting abuse and neglect, aiding foster parents, identifying children with special needs and supporting parents in the difficult job of parenting. In addition to the wide-reaching programs, CCWC has hosted the Children’s Fair for 17 years and a reception honoring the efforts of child care providers for 6 years. Central to its mission, CCWC has brought attention to the needs of young children and their families since its inception. Most recently CCWC has become a leader in serving the Hispanic community through the Parents as Teachers Program.

The Children’s Council provides monthly trainings for child care providers and information for parents about childcare and also works to increase the overall quantity of childcare available in Watauga.

The Children’s Council has grown from one employee in 1977 to over eight employees serving more than 1,500 children annually.

The Children’s Council began through several small grants from the Juvenile Justice program as well as private donations.  Today CCWC operates through state allocations from Smart Start, local and federal grants and donations. The Children’s Council has been a United Way Member Agency for more than 18 years and continues to receive funding and support the mission of the United Way.

The reception is open to all Watauga county residents and will honor the work of many people over the years in making The Children’s Council one of the most respected agencies in Watauga County. Please stop by the Jones House on April 24 to help celebrate the many accomplishments of The Children’s Council.
