Gurl and Girl: Laughing with the Legends at Hayes Performing Arts Center April 28

Story by Sam Calhoun

Wish you could travel back to the 1950s and meet all the stars who are indelible components of popular culture? Wish you could do it all in one night?

You’re in luck, because Gurl and Girl: Laughing with the Legends—a rollicking revue of the 1950s and the decade’s celebrities—is coming to the Mariam and Robert Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock this Saturday, April 28, at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by clicking to www.brcac.org, by calling 828-295-9627 or by stopping by the Hayes Center box office on Jamie Fort Road in Blowing Rock.

For years, musicians, singers, actors and impersonators Joey and Brian Gurl have been on the road producing and performing in Gurl and Girl: Laughing with the Legends at large venues across the country. Their show, supplemented by world-renowned violinist Lenny Ski, includes visits from Lucille Ball, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe.

All components of 1950s popular culture are brought to life in Gurl and Girl: Laughing with the Legends—from movies to television, from Broadway to popular music—with singing, dancing, costume changes, dynamic impersonations, musicianship, masterful theater and comedy. The audience is also involved in the production as the actors break the fourth wall often during the show.

Joey Gurl is an actress, dancer, comic and costume designer who designed all the visual elements of the show. Her show counterpart, Brian Gurl, is a classically trained pianist who is adept at all styles of music, including jazz and dance. Both actors display their talents as impersonators as well.

Lenny Ski aids Gurl and Girl in their performance. Ski studied violin at the New England Conservatory of Music and has extensive performing experience including stage shows, pop and dance bands and bluegrass groups. He recorded an album with singer-songwriter Dicky Betts, a member of the Allman Brothers Band. For more than fifteen years, Ski was a featured star on cruise ships all over the world.
