Latino Celebration of the Day of the Child April 28

Story by Allison Peacock

On Saturday, April 28, the Watauga County Cooperative Extension is hosting a Latino Celebration of El Día de los Niños, the Day of the Child. This free event will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone.

The main attraction of the celebration is a child-focused health and safety fair. Spanish-speaking women in an English class offered by the Cooperative Extension have done the majority of planning for this fair. Events such as a puppet show and games for children are on the agenda.

At their April 18 meeting, the women’s group worked on posters that illustrate basic health and safety ideas. These posters are a collaborative effort, including input from both Spanish and English speakers. The women also practiced a presentation on chemical safety at the Wednesday meeting. This demonstration will highlight the similarities between household chemicals and food/liquid items. The focus of this demonstration is to encourage families to store the chemicals out of reach of children.

The April 28 celebration will also include a fire truck demonstration, along with tips about fire and carbon monoxide poisoning prevention.

The late afternoon event will be divided into rotations. Participants will have an opportunity to attend all the safety demonstrations as well as a dinner.

The Cooperative Extension staff is excited about this first-time event and hoping for about 100 to 200 participants. All are invited to attend this free event.
