Proceeds Will Buy Food for Local Residents

On Tuesday, June 5, the Hunger & Health Coalition, along with 18 High Country eateries, are asking local residents to “take a bite out of hunger” by treating themselves to buy a meal away from home.
The inaugural Food Share Day will coincide with the 6th Annual National Hunger Awareness Day, and all proceeds from the event will be used to buy food for distribution to local residents. Each restaurant will donate 10 percent of its profit on June 5 to the Hunger & Health Coalition.
According to statistics from secondharvest.org, 35.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households in 2005. A USDA statistic on the site stated ranks North Carolina as ninth in the nation in prevalence of food insecurity.
“What we want people in the community to do is boycott their kitchen and go out to eat for a great cause,” said Compton Fortuna, executive director of the Hunger & Health Coalition. “It’s a pretty simple fundraiser, but we hope it will promote hunger awareness in our community and across the country.”
According to Fortuna, the Hunger & Health Coalition distributes 10,000 pounds of perishable and 10,000 pounds of non-perishable food each month. Because children are out of school during summer, the United Way agency’s services will soon be in higher demand than usual.
This month’s recent Stamp Out Hunger event collected 13,000 pounds from citizens throughout the area.
