Part 4: Is Imidacloprid Killing the Honeybees?
Is imidacloprid—a chemical manufactured by Bayer that is found in 90 percent of insecticides sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Wal-Mart—killing the honeybees? If the answer is yes, it’s a weighty accusation. But mountains of scientific and empiricalevidence indicate that the nicotine-based imidacloprid is affecting honeybees. For instance, 16 European countries have banned the insecticide, blaming it for massive declines in their bee populations. Even though Bayer denies the allegations to a point, the company still has paid out millions—$70 million in France alone—to beekeepers around the world, hoping they will keep their mouths shut.
