Hidden Treasure: Green Valley Community Park

New Playground Dedication August 5
The Green Valley Community Park informally opened its brand new playground on July 16. The Safe Play Company constructed the 70-foot by 47-foot playground area. “All of the equipment is constructed of recycled milk jugs. That may sound like it would be flimsy but it is extremely sturdy,” said Green Valley Community Park Board Member Janice Carroll. (Full Story)

 

 

16th Annual Avery Banner Elk Fine Art and Master Craft Festival Saturday and Sunday

The Battle To Save The Hemlocks

Last week, High Country Press explored the hypothesis that imidacloprid—a chemical manufactured by Bayer that is found in 90 percent of insecticides sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Wal-Mart—is killing honeybees and causing colony collapse disorder (CCD)—an unexplained phenomenon that is decimating bee hives across the nation.

But CCD isn’t a new phenomenon. CCD has occurred off and on throughout the past two centuries all over the country, but imidacloprid wasn’t invented until halfway into the 20th century. How then could the chemical be responsible for CCD? (Full Story)
