Story by Kathleen McFadden
The annual fall return of the university students means a lot of changes around Boone, but one of the coolest ones is the beginning of the free concerts at the Hayes School of Music.
The first one of the semester is Thursday, August 30, when bassoonist Jon Beebe will present a recital in Rosen Concert Hall at 8:00 p.m.
Following Beebe’s recital, local music lovers will have to wait a couple of weeks for the next performances, but the pace picks up in September and then goes full tilt in October.
Joining Beebe, a member of the music faculty, for his recital are fellow faculty members Christina Hayes on piano, Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham on flute and Catherine Wood on clarinet.
The program features Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite No. 3 in C, BWV 1009, Walter Piston’s Three Pieces and André Previn’s Sonata.
Although written for cello, Beebe said the Bach piece lends itself well to performance on the bassoon. “It is such a great piece of music. It’s a big work—20 minutes long,” Beebe said. This is the first time Beebe has performed the solo work.
The Piston composition is a trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon and will introduce new faculty member and clarinetist Catherine Wood to the Hayes School of Music audience.
While Previn is widely known as a conductor and pianist, few people know him as a jazz pianist and a composer. Sonata is performed by bassoon and piano and showcases Previn’s jazz performance and composition talents, according to Beebe.
Here’s the free concert schedule at Appalachian through September. All concerts are at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. For more info about the performances, call 828-262-3020.
