Say It With Music

Valentine’s Day Full of Entertainment Choices

Story by Anna Oakes

This year, you have no excuse. We’ve got a bouquet of Valentine’s Day entertainment ideas for you and your lady, you and your beau, you and your girlfriends or even you and your mama—with two weeks to spare.

Valentine’s Day falls smack in the middle of JAZZfest, a music festival featuring more than two weeks of jazz and jazz-inspired performances at Appalachian State University.

“Valentine’s Day is one of the biggest days of the festival,” said Alan Mueller, assistant director of the Division of Student Programs at ASU. Enjoy a student jazz combo at lunchtime in Crossroads Coffeehouse or evening concerts by Chicago jazz pianist Willerm Delisfort, jazz saxophonist and regional favorite Todd Wright or funky bass virtuoso Victor Wooten.

Why not offset the exorbitant consumer spending of this holiday with some charitable giving? The Saturday before Valentine’s is the annual Hospitality House Valentine Ball, a dinner and auction benefiting the Boone-based homeless shelter. And on Valentine’s Day, the benefit dinner featuring The Willerm Delisfort Project at ASU’s Student Union Solarium raises money for the Jazz Studies program, and the Avery Arts Council hosts a dinner and dance to generate funds for the arts.

Make your dinner plans now, and for extra Valentine’s brownie points, see if you can squeeze in more than one performance on this holiday.
