Victor Wooten Band Brings the Funk Back To Legends February 14

Story by David Brewer

Known all around the world as one of the greatest electric bass players of all time, musical phenom Victor Wooten does things with his fingers that seem to defy any reasonable explanation.

On Thursday, February 14, Wooten and his band will drop a one-megaton Valentine’s Day funk bomb at Legends. Drop your fancy dinner plans and redirect the money you were going to spend on roses to buy tickets to see the mind-warping musician and founding Flecktone do what he does best.

Playing bass since age two, Wooten’s personal technique is a deep collection of styles mastered by others: the double thumbing and slap funk of Sly & The Family Stone’s Larry Graham, the two-handed tapping of guitarist Stanley Jordan and the cascading arpeggios of guitarists such as Eddie Van Halen or Steve Vai. His inimitable amalgam has garnered him three Bass Player of the Year awards from Bass Player Magazine.

Wooten’s performances with his solo band have typically been slightly less eclectic as those of the Flecktones, generally focusing on hard-hitting funk-rock and jazz-infused r&b. According to his website, Wooten’s sixth solo CD, Palmystery, is slated for release in April.

Tickets are $8 in advance for students and $10 for all others. Purchase tickets at ASU’s Plemmons Student Union or at Legends on the night of the show. For more info on the show, click to www.apps.appstate.edu. For more info on Wooten, click to www.victorwooten.com.
