Local Fine Woodworker Makes National Splash

Work by David Finck Featured in Fine Woodworking and American Style

A six-page article by Valle Crucis fine woodworker David Finck is featured in the Jan/Feb issue of Fine Woodworking magazine from Taunton Press, the flagship magazine in the country for fine woodworkers. Finck’s article focuses on an area in which he has particular expertise: the making of wooden hand planes. Finck has been making and using wooden planes in his work building one-of-a-kind furniture, lighting and acoustic guitars since 1984. In 2001 he published a book on the topic called Making and Mastering Wood Hand Planes. He has taught workshops on the subject throughout the country.

Fine Woodworking magazine also hosts a website where you can view a seven-minute video of Finck discussing the fine points of setting up and using the plane described in the article. To see the video, click to www.taunton.com/finewoodworking.

American Style magazine from Rosen Media Inc. is a national publication focusing on art, craft, travel and interior design. The cover of the April 2008 Issue trumpets “10 New Takes on Studio Furniture.” Finck’s cherry entry hall table is featured among this select group. You can see the same piece locally at Carlton Gallery in Foscoe—call 828-963-4288 for directions and information—or by clicking to www.davidfinck.com.

Last year, Finck loaned his talents to a film production scheduled for release this summer. The movie is an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ book Nights in Rodanthe and stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane. The Lane character does woodworking, so Finck was hired to coach the actress to play the part realistically. Finck also crafted two boxes slated to play a role in the movie.

Finck is offering a series of one-day workshops at his studio in Valle Crucis this spring. For complete information and to view his work, click to his website or call 828-963-6504.
