Curious about Antarctica?
What are you curious about? Have you ever wondered about the world’s most
remote continent? You are invited to join ASU geologist Dr. Ellen Cowan for a program and delicious lunch at the Broyhill Inn on Thursday, March 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m. as she shares stories and pictures from her work in Antarctica.
Cowan has been the chief scientist on several sediment coring projects, and during the summer of 2006-07, she was selected to work in Antarctica as part of a 50-person science team from the U.S., New Zealand, Germany and Italy.
Cowan’s work with the ANDRILL project involved the study of rock core samples drilled from beneath the Ross Sea, and her off-time was spent exploring and photographing her surroundings. Also—because of the Internet and instant communication available today—Cowan was able to almost immediately send stories about her journey to her two daughters and their classmates at school. For this lunch program, Cowan will share many interesting and sometimes humorous anecdotes about living and working in such remote conditions, as well as discuss so
me of the scientific findings of her team.
This program will be of interest to anyone interested in unusual travel destinations, the study of global warming, and also of interest for anyone who appreciates the challenge of balancing a career and family. The Broyhill Inn is noted for serving good food in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. On this first official day of spring, please join us by the fireside for lunch, incredible photographs, and stories from Cowan’s travels to Antarctica: the coldest, windiest, driest continent on Earth.
