Battle of the Bands at Legends March 5

Story by Anna Oakes

Appalachian State University is more than an institution of future teachers and businessmen—it’s also a breeding ground for new musical collaborations. For the 10th year, ASU celebrates students who make their own music with the annual Battle of the Bands on Wednesday, March 5.

APPS, the student programming club responsible for booking shows at Legends, extended the deadline for submissions until Thursday, February 28, so High Country Press was unable to obtain before press time the names of the bands that will perform and compete at Battle of the Bands.

Four bands will be selected from the field of entries. Bands were required to submit a CD with two songs to be considered by the APPS committee. At least one member of the band must be a full-time ASU student.

During the contest, the bands will play 30-minute sets, with only one cover song allowed. Bands have 20 minutes to set up. Judges, consisting of entertainment writers, music professors, WASU radio staff and sound engineers, consider audience response, originality, performance and musicianship. The winning band receives a cash prize.

Randy Kelly, manager of Legends, said as many as 20 bands have entered the contest in previous years. The event typically draws an audience of several hundred, he added.

“There’s a lot of bands that are slightly under the radar, and this gives them the chance to take that next step,” Kelly said.

Tickets to Battle of the Bands are $3. Doors open at 9:00 p.m. For more information, click to www.apps.appstate.edu or call 828-262-2855.
