State Employee’s Credit Union Offers Discounts For Green Vehicles
Story by Sam Calhoun
In addition to better gas mileage and saving the environment, now there is yet another reason to buy a green vehicle. State Employee’s Credit Union (SECU) is now offering Green Vehicle Loans to its members, giving lower interest rates to customers who decide to purchase a vehicle that the Environmental Protection Agency considers green.
People must be a member of SECU to be eligible for the program. State employees, public school system employees and people employed in county departments of health, mental health and social services are eligible to be SECU members.
To find out if a vehicle is considered green by the Environmental Protection Agency, click to www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/Index.do.
If a vehicle is considered green, then SECU members who take a Green Vehicle Loan from SECU receive a 1 percent lower interest rate on their loan compared to the standard interest rate for new vehicles.
“We’ve had several members from this branch take advantage of the Green Vehicle Loans,” said Michael J. Salzano of SECU. “We want to promote being green.”
Taking the green rewards a step further, SECU also offers lower origination fees and lower closing costs to SECU members buying homes that are certified Energy Star, or certified as energy efficient.
The Boone branches of SECU are located at 1470 Blowing Rock Road and at 410 New Market Boulevard.
