The iconoclastic American poet e.e. cummings once said, “There’s a hell of a universe next door. Let’s go.” In It’s All Done With Mirrors, Emmy Award winner Anthony Zerbe’s one-man show based on the life and work of the famous wordsmith, Zerbe knocks on that door and barrels through, exposing the world of the unconventional poet in a mesmerizing, one-man tour-de-force.
The Hayes Performing Arts Center presents the nationally acclaimed performance on Friday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m.
Moving quickly between dramatization and interpretation of cummings’ works, Zerbe peels layers from the mystique of an artist who was dubbed “part P.T. Barnum, part William Faulkner.”
Its title taken from cummings’ play Him, Mirrors has been hailed by critics as “a delicious evening of theater” (San Diego Union) and “the art of acting honed to a FINE point” (Los Angeles Times), with the distinguished actor trotting out a parade of characters, accents and wordplay to capture cummings’ favorite subjects: Paris, New York, the moon, spring, first love and the circus.
Since the late 1960s, Zerbe’s prolific career has spanned television (The Young Riders, Gunsmoke, Mission Impossible, Murder, She Wrote), movies (Papillon, Cool Hand Luke, License to Kill) and theatre (Terra Nova, Solomon’s Child, The Little Foxes and Moon Besieged).
Tickets are $26 for adults and $20 for students. For tickets or more info, call the Hayes Center Box Office at 828-295-9627. The Hayes Performing Arts Center is located at 152 Jamie Fort Road off U.S. Highway 321 in Blowing Rock.
